Amorphous films of MxSn1-x (M=Fe,Co,Ni) have been prepared by vapor quenching over a wide range of composition. Interference functions have been obtained from electron diffraction, electrical-transport properties have been measured, and forming ability and stability have been studied. Chemical short-range order has been found to be very similar in the three condensed states of these alloys (amorphous, liquid, crystalline states) and the notion of isotypical structure has been extended to amorphous alloys. The forming ability of these metallic glasses has been correlated to the difficulties for these systems to accommodate too large a chemical disorder in crystalline phases. |
