This year marks the 150th anniversary of Max Planck. Although he is rightly considered one of the founding fathers of quantum mechanics, his role in the development of statistical mechanics is usually seen as minor when compared to his famous paper of 1900. However, he spent most of his life working on themes related to statistical mechanics and thermodynamics. In this talk I shall give a historical perspective of his achievements, particularly his participation in the development of the Fokker-Planck equation. |
