Ubiquity of the Weibull distribution: a simple example
Jean-Yves Fortin
GPS IJL (Nancy 1)
Monday 11 January 2010 , 10h25
Salle de séminaire du groupe de Physique Statistique

The Weibull function is widely used to describe skew distributions observed in nature, for example in material rupture or material fragmentation. However, the origin of this ubiquity has not been explained appropriately. In this presentation, we will derive the Weibull distribution from a simple branching process or cell replication system, and find an analytic relation between the branching probability and the shape parameter of the Weibull distribution.
