We shall review the status and the validity of the minimum and the maximum entropy-production principles for mesoscopic nonequilibrium systems. The main result understands these principles within a dynamical fluctuation theory for continuous time Markov processes close to equilibrium. While the entropy-production principles have remained immensely popular in climatology and in ecology studies, serious doubt must be cast on the efficiency and the sole relevance of entropy concepts far from equilibrium. |
